Biography

Chef Bear

Ullman was born and raised in Hawaii.  It was there that his eccentric mother instilled in him—the love of art and nature and the value of creativity.  Lessons that have served him well in the culinary world as well as in woodturning. After traversing the country as a vagabond culinarian he settled down with his family and bought a small lathe on a whim, he quickly found his new passion and began burning up the motor.  He invested in a larger custom built lathe and the magic began to unfold.  His relentless pursuit of knowledge and his endless energy and enthusiasm has produced many beautiful, useful and soulful creations.

Artist’s Statement

I’ve been in restaurants and hotels for most of my life.  In the kitchen I get to take the freshest finest local ingredients available and create sensual works of art.  A delicate balance of the practical and the indulgent principals are developed in my shop, where my talents and beliefs come full circle. My intention is to reclaim the history and life of the tree. And as theses pieces are used, the next chapter of a long a wonderful story is written.
